Buying Liquidation Truckloads in the UK: A Complete Guide

UK Truckloads

Search for liquidation stock in the UK and you will find pallets. Job lots, mixed pallets, customer return pallets, auction lots — the entire market is built around buying one pallet at a time.

Truckloads are barely discussed. Not because British resellers do not want them, but because very few sellers here offer them and almost nobody has written about how buying one actually works.

We hold stock in Gateshead and in Arkansas, so we sell into both markets. This is what a UK truckload purchase actually involves, and where it differs from the American version people read about online.

What counts as a truckload in the UK

The first thing to unlearn is the American figure. A US truckload is a 53-foot trailer holding 24 to 26 standard pallets. UK loads are smaller.

Our current UK stock runs between 15 and 24 pallets, with most loads at 23 or 24. Road regulations, smaller trailers and the realities of British delivery addresses all push the number down.

The practical consequence: a UK truckload holds less than an American one at the same description. When you compare a British price to a US price you have read about, you are not comparing the same quantity of goods.

What UK loads cost

Our current UK inventory, in full:

Load Condition Type Pallets Price
AOSOM Salvage Large / Mech 15–23 £750
AOSOM Returns Mixed 15–23 £5,000
Amazon Processed FC New Smalls 24 £6,000
Costway Returns Mediums 23 £7,000
Greenworks Returns Large / Mech 23 £7,500
Amazon Toy New Mediums 24 £12,000

The working range is £5,000 to £12,000 for a conventional load, with the median around £7,000. The £750 salvage load sits well outside that band and is a different proposition entirely — we have written about it separately.

Note how much lower the ceiling is than in the US, where loads run to $75,000. High-value truckloads of new electronics and branded goods largely do not circulate in the UK market at this level. If you are looking for a £40,000 load, you will struggle to find one.

Where UK stock comes from

Three sources dominate:

  • Direct-to-consumer brands. AOSOM, Costway, Greenworks and similar sell heavily online in the UK and generate large volumes of returns. Because they sell direct rather than through retail, their returns come back to one place and get liquidated as whole loads. This is why UK truckloads skew towards home, garden and outdoor goods.
  • Amazon UK fulfilment centres. The same LPN and FC processes that exist in the US operate here, producing both processed new stock and unprocessed returns.
  • Retailer clearance and administration stock. Less predictable, appears in bursts, and is usually gone quickly.

What you will find far less of than in the US: big-box general merchandise. There is no British Walmart or Target feeding the market at that volume. A UK load is more likely to be brand-specific than retailer-specific.

Delivery is the real difference

This is where UK buyers get caught out, and it has nothing to do with the goods.

  • Most UK buyers do not have a loading dock. Industrial units often do; garages, farm buildings and small yards do not. Without one you need a tail lift, and that must be arranged when the load is booked, not on the day.
  • Access is genuinely restrictive. An articulated lorry cannot get down many British residential and rural roads. Low bridges, narrow lanes, tight turns and parked cars cause failed deliveries, and a failed delivery is charged to you.
  • Rigid versus artic. If access is tight, a smaller rigid vehicle may be needed — which limits how much can come in one drop and changes the cost.
  • Unloading is your job. The driver is not obliged to help. Have people and a pallet truck ready before the vehicle arrives.

Be honest about your site when you enquire. A seller who knows you have no dock and a narrow entrance can quote correctly; one who finds out on delivery day cannot.

Tax, and why it matters more here

Buying at truckload scale will move most resellers past the VAT registration threshold faster than they expect. Buying and selling secondhand goods also opens up the VAT margin scheme, which changes how you account for tax on resold items.

This is genuinely worth getting right before you scale, not after. We are not accountants and this is not tax advice — get a professional involved early. We have written a fuller overview in the VAT margin scheme for liquidation resellers.

Truckload or job lot?

For most UK resellers, the honest answer is that a job lot is the right starting point and a truckload is the right next step — and the crossover happens later than people think.

The decision turns on storage, unloading capability and how quickly you can process volume, not on ambition. We have set out the comparison in detail in job lots vs truckloads.

Questions to ask any UK truckload seller

  1. How many pallets, exactly? “A truckload” is not a quantity. Ask for the number, and whether it is fixed or a range.
  2. Where does it ship from? A load leaving a UK warehouse and a load being imported are completely different on cost and timing.
  3. Is a tail lift included in the quoted delivery? Ask explicitly. Assume nothing.
  4. Is there a manifest? And if so, is the retail value based on current selling prices or RRP?
  5. What is the condition, precisely? New, customer returns and salvage behave completely differently.
  6. Who owns the load if it is refused on delivery? Know the answer before the lorry is outside.

Where to start

Our current stock lists every load with its pallet count, condition, load type and price, and you can filter to UK stock only.
