If you are new to buying liquidation stock, wholesale pallets or clearance merchandise in the UK, you will quickly discover that suppliers use a lot of industry terminology that can feel overwhelming at first.
Understanding these terms before you pick up the phone or send your first enquiry can make a huge difference. It helps you avoid costly mistakes, compare deals properly, and negotiate with confidence โ whether you are buying from a UK warehouse, sourcing truckloads from the US, or starting your first pallet purchase.
Here are the 12 essential terms every UK reseller should know.
1. MOQ โ Minimum Order Quantity
What it means: The minimum quantity of units a supplier will sell in a single order.
Example: If a supplier has an MOQ of 50 units, you cannot purchase just 5 to test the product โ you must buy at least 50.
Why it matters for UK buyers: MOQ determines how much capital you need upfront. For liquidation truckloads and pallets, the MOQ is typically one full pallet or one full truckload. At Southern Liquidation we sell both individual pallets and full truckloads depending on your budget and storage capacity.
2. Per Unit Cost
What it means: The actual cost of each individual item within a bulk purchase.
Formula: Per Unit Cost = Total Cost รท Number of Units
Example: If a pallet costs ยฃ300 and contains 600 items โ your per unit cost is 50p per item.
Why it matters: Per unit cost is how you determine whether a load is worth buying. A low per unit cost gives you more room to price competitively on Whatnot, Tilt, eBay or Facebook Marketplace and still make a healthy margin. Use our free Cost Per Item Calculator to work this out instantly.
3. Manifest
What it means: A detailed inventory list showing what is included in a pallet, box or truckload before purchase.
What it typically includes:
- Product names and descriptions
- Quantities of each item
- Product categories
- Sometimes estimated retail values
The most important thing to know about manifests: They are estimates only โ not guarantees. Manifests are created at high volume processing facilities and counting errors are common. Never make a buying decision based solely on a manifest. Treat it as a guide not a contract.
Manifested vs Unmanifested: Some loads come with a full manifest. Others โ especially Amazon returns loads โ are unmanifested, meaning you do not know exactly what is inside. Unmanifested loads are typically cheaper and are popular with bin store owners and live sellers on Whatnot and Tilt.
4. Stock Grades โ Grade A, B and C
What it means: A grading system used to describe the condition of returned, surplus or clearance products.
| Grade | Condition | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Grade A / New | Unused, often in original packaging. No signs of use. | eBay, Amazon FBA, retail |
| Grade B / Returns | Customer returned. May be opened or lightly used. Packaging may be damaged. | Bin stores, Whatnot, Tilt, eBay |
| Grade C / Salvage | Damaged, missing parts or heavily used. May need repair. | Parts, repair specialists, experienced buyers only |
At Southern Liquidation our UK programs include Returns, Overstock and Salvage loads โ each clearly labelled so you know exactly what you are buying before you commit.
5. End of Line (EOL)
What it means: Products a retailer or manufacturer has decided to discontinue โ either because a new version is being released, the range is being simplified or the retailer is changing suppliers.
Why it is great for UK resellers: End of line stock is often brand new, in original packaging, and available at significant discounts. It is one of the most underrated opportunities in the liquidation market. The products are still in demand โ the retailer just does not want them on the shelf anymore.
6. Liquidation Stock
What it means: Inventory sold quickly โ often at heavily discounted prices โ when a business needs to clear stock fast. Common reasons include business closures, bankruptcy, warehouse consolidation, store refurbishments and excess inventory.
Why it matters: Liquidation stock is where the biggest discounts in the wholesale market are found. It is the core of what Southern Liquidation does โ we source liquidated inventory from major US and UK retailers and make it available to resellers across the UK, US, Canada and Europe.
7. Wholesale
What it means: Purchasing products in bulk directly from manufacturers, distributors or primary suppliers at reduced prices, with the intention of reselling at a profit.
Wholesale vs Liquidation: Wholesale typically refers to new, in-season merchandise bought in bulk. Liquidation refers to surplus, returned or discontinued stock sold at a deeper discount. Both are valid sourcing strategies โ liquidation typically offers lower prices but more variability in product condition.
8. Joblot
What it means: A mixed collection of products sold together as a single purchase. The contents may be unrelated and can vary significantly.
Popular in the UK market: Joblots are very common in the UK wholesale and liquidation space. You will often see them listed on eBay, Facebook Marketplace and at trade shows. They can offer excellent hidden value but require a willingness to take some risk on the mix of products inside.
How this differs from a truckload: A truckload from a specific retailer like Amazon or Walmart has a known source and general product category even if unmanifested. A joblot can contain almost anything from multiple sources.
9. Ex-Display
What it means: Products previously used as display models in retail stores. They are functional and complete but may have light cosmetic wear from being handled by customers.
Common ex-display categories:
- Furniture and home furnishings
- Kitchen appliances
- Electronics โ TVs, sound systems, smart home devices
- Garden equipment
- Power tools
Why UK resellers love ex-display: These items are often in excellent working condition and available at 30-60% below retail. They sell well on Facebook Marketplace, eBay and at car boot sales.
10. FOB โ Freight On Board
What it means: The location where a liquidation load originates โ and therefore where freight costs are calculated from.
Why it matters for UK buyers: When buying from Southern Liquidation’s US warehouse in Siloam Springs, Arkansas โ the FOB location determines your international shipping cost to the UK. For UK-based loads from our Gateshead warehouse the freight cost is significantly lower. Always factor in the full freight cost when calculating your landed cost per unit.

11. Net Terms
What it means: A payment arrangement that allows a buyer to receive goods immediately and pay later โ for example Net 30 means payment is due within 30 days of receiving the goods.
In the liquidation industry: Most liquidation suppliers including Southern Liquidation require payment upfront before goods are released or shipped. Net terms are typically only available to buyers with an established relationship and a strong payment history. As a new buyer, plan to pay in full before your first few orders.
12. Retail Arbitrage
What it means: Buying discounted products from retail stores and reselling them for a profit on another channel โ typically eBay, Amazon, Vinted, Whatnot or Tilt.
Examples: Buying clearance items from B&M, TK Maxx or Primark and reselling them on eBay for a profit. Or buying a liquidation pallet from Southern Liquidation and selling individual items on Whatnot or Tilt.
Why it is popular with UK resellers: Retail arbitrage is one of the easiest ways to start a reselling business with relatively low starting capital. As you grow you can move from retail arbitrage into pallet and truckload buying for better margins and higher volume.
