One of the most common questions new resellers ask is simple — what pallets or truckloads should I actually buy? The honest answer is that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. And that is actually good news, because it means there is likely a program out there that is right for your specific business model.
There Is No Universal “Best” Pallet
When it comes to buying liquidation pallets or truckloads, the right choice depends entirely on the type of operation you are running. A bin store has very different needs than an eBay reseller. A flea market vendor sources differently than a liquidation warehouse. A UK pallet reseller has different requirements than a US auction house.
The best pallet is the one that fits your space, your budget, your team size and your selling platform — not the one with the lowest price tag or the most impressive retail value on paper.
Understanding the Types of Liquidation Inventory Available
There are hundreds of different liquidation programs available and they vary widely in terms of quality, category and condition. Here are the main types you will encounter:
Customer Returns
These are items returned by consumers to retailers like Amazon, Walmart or Target. They may be opened, lightly used or in original packaging. Condition is inconsistent which means more sorting time — but often higher resale value on individual items when sold correctly.
Best for: eBay sellers, Whatnot and Tilt live sellers, bin stores, flea market vendors
Overstock
Retail overstock consists of brand new items the retailer ordered too many of. These are cleaner and easier to resell since the items are new and often still in original packaging. Margins may be tighter because the value is more predictable — but so is the quality.
Best for: Amazon FBA sellers, online store owners, retail resellers
Shelf Pulls
Items removed from store shelves, often still in original packaging. These are popular because they tend to be in good condition and photograph well for online listings. Shelf pulls often come from seasonal changeovers or store resets.
Best for: eBay and Amazon sellers, flea markets, retail stores
Salvage
Salvage loads contain damaged, heavily used or incomplete items. These are priced the lowest but require the most work — testing, repair, parting out for components. Not recommended for beginners.
Best for: Experienced resellers, repair specialists, parts sellers
Floorload Truckloads
Full trailer loads stacked directly inside the truck — no individual pallets. These contain large volumes of mixed merchandise and are ideal for bin stores, auction houses and large scale pallet resellers. They require a forklift or unloading crew and significant storage space.
Best for: Bin stores, auction houses, wholesale pallet resellers
How to Match Inventory to Your Business Model
The key question is not just what is available — it is what can you actually move. Here is how to think through the decision:
Consider your selling platform
- eBay / Amazon FBA — customer returns and overstock work well. Individual item value is easier to capture when listing one item at a time.
- Whatnot / Tilt live selling — mixed customer returns with high variety. The surprise element drives bidding. Smalls and general merchandise perform best.
- Facebook Marketplace — large heavy items like furniture, appliances and tools. Local pickup means no shipping headaches.
- Bin store — high piece count mixed loads. You need volume and variety. Amazon smalls, general merchandise floorloads and mixed returns are ideal.
- Flea market / car boot — affordable general merchandise. Variety is important. Customer returns and shelf pulls both work well.
Consider your storage capacity
Truckloads require serious space — typically 2,000 square feet minimum to receive, sort and store a full load comfortably. If you are working out of a garage or small storage unit, pallets are the smarter starting point. You can always scale up once you have a larger space.
Consider your sorting capacity
Customer returns require more time per item to test, photograph and list. If you do not have the labour or the time to process individual items, overstock or shelf pulls are more efficient — cleaner inventory that is faster to move.
Consider your capital availability
Pallets let you start smaller and learn the business before scaling up. A single pallet can cost anywhere from £200 to £2,000 depending on source and condition. A truckload ties up significantly more cash and requires a faster operation to be profitable. Start with what you can afford to lose if the first purchase teaches you an expensive lesson.
Consider your experience level
- Complete beginner — start with 1-2 pallets of customer returns or overstock from a reputable supplier. Learn what sells in your market before scaling up.
- Some experience — move to larger pallet quantities or small mixed loads. Start testing different categories to find your sweet spot.
- Established operation — full truckloads and floorloads offer the best cost per unit and the fastest way to scale a bin store or auction house.
Questions to Ask Before You Commit to Any Program
- What retailer does this inventory come from?
- What is the condition — returns, overstock or salvage?
- Is there a manifest and how accurate is it typically?
- What is the approximate piece count?
- What is the cost per unit after freight?
- What categories of product does this load typically contain?
- Is this a manifested or unmanifested load?
- What are the freight costs to my location?

Choosing the Right Supplier
Once you know what type of inventory you need, finding the right supplier is the next step. Here is what to look for:
- Transparency — a good supplier will clearly describe what they are selling and answer your questions honestly
- Reputation — look for reviews, references and evidence of an established track record
- Clear dispute process — understand what happens if the load does not match the description
- Consistent supply — one great pallet is nice but a reliable weekly or monthly supply is what builds a real business
- Multiple program types — the best suppliers offer a range of options so you can find what works for your operation
